Organic Farming

Organic Farming Overview

The organic farming project is a special pride of the VSBT Biovillage project as it provides a holistic picture of the various inter-related projects that have been done over the years. This project required a deep knowledge of the following, specifically with respect to the Baramati Taluka.

Land Conservation: Survey, Soil testing and Conditioning.

Water Conservation: Survey, top sheet reading and rock angioplasty.

Bioresourcing: Medicinal Plants, Aromatic Plants, Processing and Nursery.

Bio Innoculants.

Bio Control Agents.

Solid Waste Management and Composting.

Apicultural Biotechnology

Apicultural Biotechnology Overview

Bee keeping and honey processing is an agriculture based industry, with very low investment and with very less labor requirements. In India beekeeping has been mainly forest based. Several natural plant species provide nectar and pollen to honey bees. Thus, the raw material for production of honey is available free from nature. Bee hives neither demand additional land space nor do they compete with agriculture or animal husbandry for any input. The beekeeper needs only to spare a few hours in a week to look after his bee colonies. Beekeeping is therefore ideally suited to him as a part-time occupation.

Fish Breeding Overview

First successful breeding of discus fish in the OFTC Baramati was took place on 25th April 2013. Of the pair male is a Brilliant Blue Turquoise and female is Red Map. During first time both the parents ate the eggs. The pair spawned after 10 days as both the parents are less than 1.2 years old and are smaller in size, the fecundity is low. All the eggs hatched and both the parents took active participation in taking care of the young ones. At present there are 40 1inch size discus in the tank. After the separation of the fishes from the discus fry, the same pair laid eggs twice, after two days ate all the eggs. Also there is other pair of brilliant blue discus.

Insects are the most diverse of all animal groups. Scientists have named and described about one million kinds of animals of which more than 900000 are insects. Many more are discovered from time to time.
