Eminent guests and speakers from Department of Social Forestry, Government of Maharashtra and National Chemical Laboratory,Pune were invited to enlighten on role of Biotechnology in social forestry.

Dr. Arvind Kumar Jha, Director General, Department of Social forestry; Government of Maharashtra was the function chief guest's who given a key note address on the need of conservation of the forest and to provide maximum benefit to the farmers by utilizing the government land for regular cultivation practices. He also talked about the role of biotechnology for the conservation of forest and endangered plant species. He discussed about how the peoples are facing problem because deforestation.

The Government is also taking initiative to provide government cultivable land to farmers for a certain time period for their cultivation. Dr. Suchishweta Kendurkar, Principle Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune; Dr. Devendra Kumar, Deputy Director General, Department of Social forestry, Government of Maharashtra; Dr. Bharat Bhusan, Dean and Secretaty, YASHADA, Pune; Shri Arvind Kamble, Deputy Director; Shri N S Ladkat, Deputy Director, Department of Social forestry; Government of Maharashtra and District Forest Officers of Government of Maharashtra was made the event successful by sharing their thoughts.

The function was presided by Dr. Sushma Chaphalkar, Founder Director, Vidya Prathisthan's School of Biotechnology, Baramati.

Dr. Suchishweta Kendurkar, Principle Scientist, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune was the eminent speaker in inaugural session. Her key note address was on "Application of Biotechnology for Improvement of Plants" in which plant tissue culture, clonal propagation, improvement of agronomic traits by marker assisted selection, genetic transformation and metabolic engineering. The micropropagation technique which is season independent having much advantage over conventional macropropagation.

She also highlighted the need of marker assisted selection for assessing genetic diversity and crop improvement. Development of bamboo cultivars by micropropagation and their field trial was taken at NCL, Pune which was quite successful. She also focused on the improvement of crop by genetic transformation viz; herbicide tolerance soybean, Bt Cotton, Bt rice and maize is the major

successful application of biotechnology. Regulation of pigment in rose by antisense technology, improving protein quality, oil quality is successfully practical application of biotechnological techniques for improving plant species. Dr. Bharat Bhusan discussed on the impact on the deforestation on the environment and need of conservation of forest. The natural habitat for wild animals and birds is getting destroyed which will lead to their extinction and the consequently disturbance to the food chain and ultimately the adverse effect on human being.

The conservation of forest and extinct plant species is necessary for preserving the natural resources. The role of biotechnology for the forest conservation was also discussed during his address. Vote of thanks was extended with the information for the application of biotechnology in social forestry.

Workshop on High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC)

Workshop on High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC)

Workshop was organized between 28th & 29th November, 2014. Following are the objectives of workshop

Objective:

To make students and staff acquaints of the modern separation technique HPTLC.

To help and further the usage of the instrument in the research being conducted in the institute.

With the rapid growth in the field of chemistry and biotechnology, separation of molecules form the mixture or secondary metabolites from the plant extract always been a challenge. To overcome this problem many of the new techniques have been developed and currently in use. Being most basic and widely used separation technique, TLC has gained much more attention of the scientific community.

So over the period of time this basic technique of TLC has evolved in to High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography. HPTLC is the most advanced from of TLC and comprises the use of chromatographic layers of utmost separation efficiency and the employment of state-of-the art instrumentation for all steps in the procedure: precise sample application, standardized reproducible chromatogram development and software controlled evaluation.
